NASA will finally open a series of samplesbrought back from the surface of the moon nearly 50 years after they werecollected during the Apollo missions.

The space agency revealed this week that ithas selected two teams to analyze the decades-old materials from Apollo 15 and17, some of which have never been opened on Earth.

Scientists at NASA’s Goddard Space FlightCenter will investigate the lunar samples to better understand the abundance oforganic compounds on the moon, and how these materials withstand the effects ofcosmic rays.

A second team will investigate the geologichistory of the moon samples using noble gases to determine how long they sat atthe surface exposed to cosmic says.

The initiative coincides with the 50thanniversary of humankind's first steps on the moon. And in just a few years,NASA says it is going back.

In a statement on the $21 billion 2020budget released yesterday, NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine doubled down onplans to send humans first to the moon and then to Mars.

Bridenstine says NASA is on track to havehumans back on the moon by 2028.

‘We will go to the Moon in the next decade with innovative, newtechnologies and systems to explore more locations across the lunar surfacethan ever before,’ Bridenstine said on Monday.

‘This time, when we go to the Moon, we will stay.

'We will use what we learn as we moveforward to the Moon to take the next giant leap – sending astronauts to Mars.'

WHAT WAS THE APOLLO PROGRAM?

Apollo was the NASA programme that launchedin 1961 and got man on the moon.

The first four flights tested the equipmentfor the Apollo Program and six of the other seven flights managed to land on themoon.

Apollo 12 landed later that year on 19November on the Ocean of Storms, writes NASA.

Apollo 13 was to be the third mission toland on the moon, but just under 56 hours into flight, an oxygen tank explosionforced the crew to cancel the lunar landing and move into the Aquarius lunarmodule to return back to Earth.

Apollo 15 was the ninth manned lunarmission in the Apollo space program, and considered at the time the mostsuccessful manned space flight up to that moment because of its long durationand greater emphasis on scientific exploration than had been possible onprevious missions.

The last Apollo moon landing happened in1972 after a total of 12 astronauts had touched down on the lunar surface.

Problem with apollo deniers is that thereis no level of evidence good enough for them to give up. They ignore 99 percentof the evidence against their beliefs and focus on the 1 percent that seems tosupport their previously conceived idea. Give them photos of the landing sites,they want better ones... Etc.. If you actually took one if them to the moon andbanged their head off the lunar lander, they would just say it was ahallucination and part of the cover up.

Because technology is constantly evolvingand they already did all the tests they could with the tech they had back then,so remaining samples were stored so future scientists could examine them withup to date methods and discover things that would have been missed orunconfirmed previously.

400 thousand they say worked on the moonlandings. If faked I can understand once maybe to beat the Russians, but whythen, did they fake it another six times?. Deniers get drunk on Tizer, livewith their mummy's and stared out the window at school. They also have Mrs.hand and her five lovely daughters wrapped around their small members all day,every day

What on earth has NASA been doing all theseyears, they spend billions of pounds getting these specimens and then don'tlook at them, they have a problem?

RobC -> treesmyname

Because the NASA missions were manned, theywere able to bring back fairly large quantities. There was plenty spare to beput aside for when new techniques were available to examine them. Same reasonwhy archaeologists often leave much of a site undisturbed.

SeniorPerson -> treesmyname

The reason the astronauts were able tobring back so many specimens is they left behind a lot of equipment and bags oftheir human wastes on the moon surface. Optimally it is always best to leavepreserved some virgin samples because if exposed to examine a sample alsobecomes contaminated with bacteria, viruses, dust, etc. And anywhere people arenot in protective gear you can also find dead skin cells and dust mite debris.We don't want to conclude their was organic elements or cellular life on themoon just because some of that airborn junk is found as it is all organic.

And the big questions is why did it takethis long? Did they have to wait for real moon samples to be collected first

Sydneysider58 -> Julie Martha news

I don't understand the wait. If you visitthe NASA museum in Houston they have a few moon rock samples behind layers oftoughened glass with all sorts of security, because it is so valuable. Then theguide tells you those samples are in fact earth rocks that look like moon rocks- again, because the real ones are simply SO valuable. But it just makes nosense - I know the moon visits happened, but just don't get the need to keepthese samples so pristine. At the cost to get them, use them!

Denis Barre -> Julie Martha news

They were waiting for technology toprogress. Testing often destroys the material, so it can't be tested again,years later, when techniques have progressed. The tests that can be carried outnow are far beyond 70s technology. This is done all the time witharchaeological sites, for example. They just re-bury them instead of excavatingthem completely, because the excavation destroys them.
